Once the destination hospital/doctor team has confirmed that you are a candidate for your procedure, they will send you a quote with the total package price of treatment. You will need to approve the quote before initiating the scheduling process. During the scheduling process, travel details such as flights and lodging are confirmed, and a passport requested if required. Before departing you will have a complete itinerary of your trip available in this portal for your review.
After arriving at your destination you will head through immigration and customs and then meet a hospital representative at a specified location outside the airport. If you require assistance or the use of a wheelchair, make sure to inform us so we can coordinate this with the proper airline authorities prior to your trip. The hospital representative will be standing outside holding a sign with your name. He or she will assist you with your luggage to a vehicle that will transport you to your hotel or the hospital, depending on your itinerary. Please review your itinerary and hospital instructions carefully as you may have to fast before arriving at the hospital. Depending on your itinerary, you may have a chance to take in some sights or even engage in a tour.
Once at the hospital you will be met by a healthcare coordinator or case manager who will be your main contact during your stay. He or she will help you with the admission process, pre-operative exams and doctor consultations. You will likely be pleasantly surprised by the quality and cleanliness of the hospital facilities and the personal attention you will receive. Patients traveling for medical tourism often receive VIP treatment that is designed to reduce your anxiety and make you feel as comfortable as possible. This includes a fast-track admission and pre-operative process, a lot of hand-holding and much more quality time with your surgeon than you may be used to at home. Depending on the type of procedure you are undergoing, you will spend anywhere from one night to several nights in the hospital. During this time your doctor, nurses and health coordinator will make sure your recovery process is going well. Depending on the destination, you may continue your recovery at your hotel or a recovery facility.
At discharge you will be provided with your medical records as well as pain medications, antibiotics and instructions for an optimal healing process. During your time at the hotel you may be required to take blood thinning medication and follow a special diet. Some patients may also undergo rehabilitation therapy. Your primary goal at the hotel is to heal, so make sure to follow all your doctor’s instructions. A day or two prior to your departure home, you will go back to the hospital for a post-op check-up by your surgeon. He or she will make sure you are healing properly and are ready to fly home.
Shortly after you return home you will meet with your clinic doctor or primary care practitioner. He will review your medical records, make sure you are healing properly, and schedule physical therapy if necessary. Make sure you take care of your incision area and contact your doctor if you have excessive pain, soreness, redness or fever. Don’t be surprised if the doctor who treated you stays in touch with you by email to follow the progress of your recovery. The ultimate goal of your medical provider is for you to have a quick and successful recovery.
